Waterway Recovery Lifts Subaru from the Rogue River with a Sikorsky SH-3H Helicopter

—October 2, 2012, City of Rogue River, Oregon

Waterway Recovery LLC was hired by the Progressive Insurance Company to remove a car from the Rogue River at the Valley of the Rogue State Park in Jackson County, Oregon.

On March 7, 2011, in an apparent suicide attempt, 36-year-old Kate McKay Boone drove her white 2010 Subaru Outback into the river. Fortunately, she swam to safety. High spring flows in the river initially made it difficult to locate the car and then the winter rains washed the submerged SUV further downstream. There were concerns about it being a dangerous obstacle to boats and rafters, and a potential environmental hazard for salmon and other aquatic life. It was relocated in spring 2012 near the south bank of the river opposite the state park's D and E loops. Plans began for its removal.

On Monday, October 1, 2012, John Rachor and Mark White of Waterway Recovery put their boat in the river under the Depot Street Bridge at the City of Rogue River. Accompanied by a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy in a separate boat, they motored upstream three miles to the location of the submerged car. In a 45-minute operation they inserted sets of cables through the windows of the vehicle to make a pickup sling which was then marked with a buoy.

On Tuesday, October 2, Brian Beattie, the operations director for Croman Corporation, gave an FAA-mandated safety briefing to the members of the agencies involved in the removal operation. Those agencies included the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Oregon State Park and Department of Environmental Quality officials, and the fire chief from the Rogue River Fire District, along with the insurance adjuster for Progressive Insurance and Rogue River Press Editor Tammy Asnicar. The area was cordoned off from all individuals not present at the briefing, including other news media.

Waterway Recovery hired Croman to lift the car out of the river with its heavy-lift Croman SH-3H Helicopter, formerly a U.S. Navy Sikorsky SH-3H. After John Rachor, Mark White, and Brian Beattie hooked the dangling 400-foot steel cable to the car's cable harness from their boat, they moved away while the helicopter started to pull the car to the shallows on the north side of the river. Empty, the SUV has a listed weight of 3,400 pounds, but filled with water, river debris, and aquatic life, the helicopter pilot gauged it at nearly 9,000 pounds. The pilot paused the lift of the car for about two minutes to let the water drain from it before taking it aloft on its short straight path to a nearby cleared field in the park. There it was lowered to the ground. The helicopter then hovered to about 20 feet of the ground to safely drop the cable before returning to Croman's base in White City, Oregon.

After tumbling along the river bottom through last winter's storms, it was obvious that the Subaru had been violently thrashed against the rocky bed of the river. Tammy Asnicar described it as "looking like a crumpled creature from the Black Lagoon." It was covered with muck and aquatic plants, and in the wreckage, park rangers discovered crawdads and two squiggling foot-and-a-half lamprey eels.

"It was a great lift," said John Rachor. With the expertise of Waterway Recovery and the professionalism of Croman Corporation's heavy-lift team, the removal effort was accomplished flawlessly. The whole team was able to make it home safe and sound.
